Im going to try Piloxing I tell my best girlfriend. Piloxing Every person I tell that I am going to take this workout class the response is the same they repeat the class name back to me with a question mark. Piloxing What the heck is Piloxing This workout class is the brainchild of Viveca Jensen a former ballerina and boxer turned Master Pilates trainer. The name sounds funny but it is no joke how it can whip you into shape The class was created in Jensens studio in Los Angeles California but in the past five years has spread like wildfire to over 50 countries across the globe. The class incorporates Jensens past and present passion for Pilates boxing and dance. These three things do not seem to go together and yet when combined create something fun powerful and effective. When I walk into the Piloxing studio it is a mix of modern clean lines and femininity. The minimalist lobby somehow still intimidates me with the amount of pink girly spandex-y things think Piloxing nail polish undies hats stretchy pants emblazoned with the Piloxing logo body skimming neon-bright tank tops but the clean almost sparse spa-like atmosphere of the rest of the studio is a nice counterbalance. And that is also how to describe the class - girly but modern hip and a little tough. Viveca Jensen is a breath of fresh air and her energy is infectious. You can find articles and pictures of Jensen online and in various publications yet none of them really do her justice. Her personality makes her even more beautiful than her pictures and speaking with her makes you want to be her friend. She connects so well with everyone in the class you feel like the most important person in the room It would seem that the people who are attracted to teaching it are as personable and pretty as Jensen. It is almost as though it is a requirement for the instructors to have fun vibrant make- you-want-to-be-like-them energy. I guess the saying is true like attracts like Women in the class range from early 20s to 50s and Jensen says this class is great for people as young as 16 and as old as 75 The students also vary drastically in size shape and athletic ability. The class is all women but Jensen says occasionally a brave man will venture into the class. Most of the women in the class myself included are wearing hot pink weighted gloves. Each glove only weighs a half of a pound but let me tell you they start to feel heavier as the class progresses and your fists are pretending to punch that guy who cut you off in traffic earlier And then your ex- boyfriend your boss the parking meter that ate your quarters and that stupid cupcake that tempted you at lunch The choreography is fun and fairly easy to follow even for those of us with bricks where our feet should be. High energy fun popular music pumps through the speakers during this full body workout. I have to say I do not look particularly graceful in class. There were women in the class I looked over at and thought Ill never look as lithe and fit as her The women that are regulars look like lean mean Piloxing machines Conversely I must have looked like a monkey who lost her banana. Like I could have starred in the show So You Think You Cant Dance. Like nobody puts Baby in a corner but maybe in my case they should. Despite my awkwardness I discovered I had a giant goofy grin plastered across my face. When Jensen asked us how we were doing Woohoo flew unabashedly out of my mouth. For the first time in my life I found myself not wanting the workout class to end It was fun and just the right amount of challenging. It was easy to modify for injuries and take things at your own pace. If your arms are tired dont jab with as much force. Your knees are sensitive Walk instead of jump. You want a little more Think of something or someone that pissed you off and let em have it There are dozens of success stories of women losing weight and toning up some that have lost over 100 pounds just doing Piloxing three times a week. But the most impactful story is a student who is battling Multiple Sclerosis who has increased mobility and function because of Piloxing 3-4 times per week. Viveca Jensen is changing lives There are naysayers that say that this isnt real Pilates or real boxing. Well it isnt It isnt Pilates or Boxing it is PILOXING. As Jensen says it works because it comes from a place of truth.
