Granted every girl is some version of Slutty Bumblebee or Slutty Bert and Ernie or Slutty Ear of Corn look it up its real usually with some serious miscalculations on how attractive her costume is but the real fun is with friends at a house party. And if youre lucky Slutty Heinz Mustard might come to your party and you can hope shes a squeeze bottle. We live in the age of instant gratification with smartphones bringing the world to our fingertips remember as a kid when youd fight with your sibling or friend over who was right about something but youd have to wait to look it up until you got home. But having instant access doesnt mean you should send invites to your party same day with a text Yo party at my house tonight. BYOB. Your friends are cooler than you they probably already have plans at that point es- pecially for a night like Halloween. Give your guests the courtesy of inviting at least two weeks in advance. -Speaking of invites typically 1 out of 4 people who say they are coming will not actually come. They will be sick have to work get invited to a different party by the hot girl in the corn cos- tume etc. So if you want your party to be hoppin make sure to invite about 25 more people than youd actually like to have at your house. Facebook invites are acceptable as are group texts but if you want to increase your attendance personalized invites are best. Hey no one said you cant copy and paste just change the name at the top -You can ask your guests to bring something to the party but you shouldnt rely on them to supply all the alcohol or food. You want to really impress Have a signature cocktail for your party. There are so many Halloween themed drinks on Pinterest you could be drunk for a week just trying them all. If that seems like too much to handle you could just grab some dry ice at your local gro- cery store and toss in a glow-stick from the dollar store and you have insta-spooky drinks no matter what you serve. -Food can also be a great way to get some Halloween fun in your party. You can spook up any tasty treat with those little plastic spiders. Freeze some in your ice cube trays drop a couple in your vegetable or chip dip and scatter across the food table. Plastic vampire teeth can be stuck in donuts for some silly sweets. Hot dogs with a little sliver removed from one end of each become fingers in a bun. Just because youre not a kid doesnt mean you cant have a little fun with your food. -Decoration is key to making your house feel spooktacular. The easiest way to have a big impact for little money and effort is to go to a fabric store and buy several yards of cheap black fabric. Drape that over everything for a dark and stormy mood. Add a bunch of candles the dollar store usually has glass jar candles that are great for this and your house will be ready to impress. -No Halloween party would be complete without a ghoulish playlist. If every other song is Monster Mash or Thriller youve over- done it. Choose your favorite party music and intersperse a dozen or so classic Halloween-y songs. Plan ahead download what you need and have the playlist set up and ready to go before the party starts. -As the host your costume should be better than average. You could go spend 50 buying a packaged throw-away costume that 3 other guys will be wearing. Or you could be a little creative and have something really memorable. Remember Slutty Corn You might get a kernel of her affection if you impress her with your costume. Check out your local thrift stores for fun unique finds. Just dont wait until October 30th or everything will be picked over. Cant find anything Search your own closet for easy costumes such as a cereal killer dead tired dick in a box black-mail 50 shades of grey or any other punny pop culture reference. To have a Halloween Party that people talk about until next years Hal- loween Party takes some extra planning but if you just put a little extra time and effort into it Miss Corn might be so impressed she wants to get with your cob. Hot dogs Throwing The Best Halloween Party By Joanna Kelly 5 BestWorst Movies Based On A Video Game By Felice LaZae 6 An amazing video game movie is still just a dream. There real- ly hasnt been a video game movie that has done any video games complex story telling any justice. In my opinion vid- eo games offer some of the most original and dynam- ic plots in any storytelling genre. What makes them difficult to translate to the big screen is the fact that they are basically choose your own adventure sto- ries. You remember those kinds of stories right I remember reading an In- diana Jones choose your own adventure novel as a kid and it was so much fun because I was creating the story as I made choices of where to take the plot page by page. This is exactly how video games work. Some video games like Heavy Rain have 20-some- thing endings while most video game classics like Silent Hill have around five different endings. While its fun to choose your own path while playing these games that makes it really hard to translate their stories into a screenplay. How do you beat allowing the viewer to choose their own adventure I think the answer lies in focusing on the storytelling when it comes to writing a video game adapted screenplay. The screenplay writers need to create a completely new story that will spark the interest of gamers who already know the familiar stories from the video games while still honoring the core origin stories and beloved mythology gamers have come to know and love. Writers must do this all while also appealing to the general non-gaming public who are just being introduced to these characters and stories for the first time. While the following lists are supposed to be the best and worst movies based on a video game I found that it was much easier to list the worst than the best with even an honorable mention list for the worst. My best video game movie list is really just the most tolerable vid- eo game movies. We still have yet to see the best video game mov- ie. With movies in production for Assassins Creed Uncharted Bio Shock Halo and Borderlands I have much hope for the future of video game movies. These are some of the most visually spectacu- lar video games of all time with art direction set design costume design and storytelling that are just dying for an incredible film ad- aptation. With some of the incredible films that have come out over the past few years I know that these video games can translate to the big screen. We have the technology and creativity. Lets see what Hollywood has in store. In the meantime here is my list of the best and worst video game movies of all time. Worst Video Game Movies 1. Super Mario Brothers 2. Street Fighter 3. Some days comedy some days drama and some days Im shooting at zombies. I also love to travel which is a cool benefit of the job. While shooting Sleepy Hollow and NCIS NOLA I was able to enjoy some great south- ern cooking and amazing jazz shows during my down time. Shooting Bones was super fun because David Boreanaz and I are both from Buffalo so between takes we would reminisce about home. And Major Crimes was a blast since I got to play such an incredibly juicy role FM Has anyone started to recognize you on the street now CA I do get recognized as Wendy the waitress more than I ever thought possible. It happens in malls and airports sometimes restau- rants or grocery stores and catches me by surprise every time. It just goes to credit the success of the show and the incredible fanbase it built. I was lucky to get invited in to shoot so many episodes and also sing fun songs on websites built for the devout fans. Not many people know this but I voiced the characters on TedMosbyIsAJerk.com httpguyforceshiswifetodressinagarbagebagforthenextthreeyears.com Those songs are really silly but were so much fun to record. FM What television shows are you a big fan of and would like to work on as a dream job FM Hello Charlene and thank you for sitting down with FLiP again We had featured you in our July 2014 issue after How I Met Your Mother had ended with your recurring guest role as Wendy the Waitress. And now you have been all over our TVs recently. With guest starring roles on shows like Bones NCIS New Orleans Major Crimes and an upcom- ing episode of Sleepy Hollow. What is it like working on all of these different shows CA Right now Im really digging Drunk History on Comedy Cen- tral. Im so impressed with the concept of this show. How fun is it to see a drunk person give a history lesson and watch actors reenact their version of how history went down. Another dream job would be to work with Johnny Depp one day. Ive been a fan of his since Nightmare On Elm Street FM Lets move on to some movie roles you have also gotten recently. You shot Live Evil with the great Tony Todd and you just won Best Actress at Scare-a-Con for your work in it as Deputy Hancock. Congratulations Can you tell us a bit about the story CA Thank you But I have to give credit to the writerdirector Ari Kirschenbaum. He created an incredibly strong and nuanced female lead and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to play her. Ari was initially a little nervous to cast me because Im only 55 and I would be commanding 3 male officers who were all 62 or taller. Luckily I was taking boxing lessons at the time and sent him a video of myself doing punching combos on a bag. After that he was convinced FM Sounds like an awesome scary movie perfect for Hallow- een viewing. Are you a fan of scary movies yourself How about 10 Im a bit of an aggressive driver myself. I think you have to be in LA because there are so many bad drivers I am very careful though and I make sure to never text and drive 11 of Halloween in general Any idea what youll be dressing up as this yearHancock. Congratulations Canyoutellusabitaboutthestory CA I was a fan of all the Nightmare On Elm Street and Exorcist movies when I was younger but as Ive gotten older Ive gotten more and more spooked by them I guess thats kind of funny considering I just shot 2 horror movies back to back. I have a few ideas for Halloween this year but I havent made decision just yet. Keep your eyes peeled on my instagram to see what I end up choosing FM On a lighter note you were also starring in the movie Adren- aline with John Schneider. What is that film about CA We shot Nefas in a remote town called Watseka a couple hours out- side Chicago where the closest form of entertainment was a Walmart 15 minutes away. The other two leads and I lived in a large house across the street from a graveyard for 3 weeks with no TV and minimal internet ac- cess. Then random things started happening to us... The wardrobe lady swallowed a close pin while adjusting someones wardrobe... The bathtub squirted up all sorts of random bugs from the plumbing. Lights were al- ways flickering. We had to stop shooting one day because of a tornado warning. So to ward out all the evil my co-star Clint Hummel decided to do Shakespeare monologues everywhere he could Haha. I think we just kept spooking ourselves FM On a lighter note you were also starring in the movie Adrenaline with John Schneider. What is that film about CA Adrenaline is a movie about a drag racer who has near a fatal car crash leaving him semi paraplegic. The film chronicles his strug- gles to walk and to learn to race again. I play the caretaker and love interest who helps him trust and love again. FM Are you a fan of drag racing or are you more of the cau- tious driver type CA Ha Im a bit of an aggressive driver myself. I think you have to be in LA because there are so many bad drivers I am very care- ful though and I make sure to never text and drive FM And as if all of that wasnt enough work you are current- ly filming the movie Not a Stranger. How has that been going and when can fans expect to see you in it CA Not A Stranger is great Its a really intriguing drama sort of in the vein of Goodwill Hunting. There are some very talented kids starring in it and director James Russo was a dream to work with Its set to be released late next year. FM Thank you so much for your time Charlene We wish you all the best continued success CA Thank you And thank you so much for featuring me on FLiP again 12 Five ThingsThings Every Man Should Have In His Closet Whether you are on your suit and tie steez like Justin Timberlake or in your ass tight den- im and dunks like Jay-Z see what I did there Fashion lyrics building a closet of classic menswear essentials is necessary to provide a fashionable foundation for the modern male. As with any persons closet the perfect ward- robe should be collected with certain quality key pieces that are timeless and can work through- out the years for any occasion. Remember quality and versatility is key Just be- cause you have more clothes does not necessarily mean you have more options. Purchasing poor- er quality items especially with the vast amount of cheap and trendy fast-fashion selections will result in damages shrinkage fading etc. and one time wears. Clothing and accessories creat- ed with quality fabrics and good construction will ensure an extended use in your closet for years. This list is in no particular order of necessity but a non-black suit is a REQUIREMENT in a mans closet. Whether you choose a navy or gray suit either color is wearable for any casual or formal situation. A business meeting a wedding or even a funeral a non-black suit is practical. Select a wool or wool blend suit for more versatility. Wool and wool blend suits can be used all year long during any season. Wool suits are known for their climate adaptability. They keep you warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather. Wool suits are also very com- fortable and more wrinkle-resistant than most suit fabrics. Make sure that the fit of your suit is paramount. FIT IS EVERYTHING. Even the worlds most expensive suit will look bad if it isnt tailored to the contours of your body. 2 3 4 5 1 Stuck in between casual or business casual Or maybe you just dont feel like wearing a pair of jeans today A pair of chinos is your go to Chinos can be dressed up or down but can still leave you comfortably in the middle. Pair your chinos with a buttoned shirt and a blazer for an after-work happy hour or a denim jacket and a pair of low top sneakers for a sporty street style look. Be sure to have a pair of khaki chinos out of all the color selections. Khaki goes with EV- ERYTHING during any season. Tip update your chinos by tailoring them for a modern slimmer fit. Not only is a plain tee an essential it is a basic must-have like a pair of underwear. Mind you I am not comparing a quality plain tee to an ordinary undershirt. A perfect plain tee sounds simple but in all honesty it is all too elusive. However perfection lies in the eye of the beholder. You have to consider fit thickness and durability. I hon- estly cant tell you what kind of perfect plain tee to get because there are so many to choose from even though it is so basic. I can just tell you what to look for. With that said when you select a plain tee keep the colors down to classics like white gray or black. Also have a va- riety of necklines to choose from such as v-neck round or polo to give you options. Most importantly select a fabric with 100 cotton whether it be organic ring-spun or mercerized cotton. With those fabrics your tees will be more durable and lustrous. The most unwanted gift during the holidays for men has got to beTHE TIE. Polka dots paisley stripes plaid and blah blah the list goes on. WHY ALL THE TIES I must admit that when I would give my brother or father a tie it would be the most ridiculous trendy and unconventional tie that I could find. So I dont blame any men out there that need to consolidate their tie collection. Of course it is fine to have some color and pattern in the mix but we are here for the essen- tials A solid color tie is necessary for a gentlemans closet. Preferably black or navy. Also choose a silk or microfiber silk imitation that is stain resistant for longevity. A simple tie can change your overall look and works for any season. Select a tie that is smooth and refined. This is smack dab in the middle of your chest so keep it classy. If there is one pair of shoes that you own that are not sneakers or flip-flops it should be a pair of oxfords. Oxfords are simple classic and sophisticated. Although a pair of brogues may look too fancy for casual wear they actually look great with jeans and khakis. Black or brown are your safest colors to choose from and leather is the best material for durability and versatility. There are also many styles to choose from such as wingtip cap toe or plain toe. Oxfords come in mid-tops and low-tops but I recommend low-tops so it can work with trousers for formals or rolled up jeans for a casual look. Tip Keep some good polish around the house to maintain shine and upkeep. Luckily with a good leather oxford you can resole and refurbish them so they can last for years. 1. Non-Black Suit 2. Chinos 3. Plain Tee 4. Solid Tie 5. Oxfords 15 Ray Bradbury is my favorite science fiction writer His works are prophet- ic and powerful. He has countless works but for the purposes of this article I will mention my three favorites Fahrenheit 451 The Martian Chronicles and The Toynbee Convector. The first one is perhaps one of his best known novels. The second is a collection of short stories connected by a common theme and the last is my favorite of his short stories. I would like to start with The Martian Chronicles. When I was 14 years old I went to England with my family. While we were in Oxford I bought a copy of this book at a quaint little store. I read it cover to cover about 20 times on the plane ride home. I still have the book. Anyway this book tells the story of humanitys exploration and colonization of Mars. Bradbury adds two very unique elements. First he gives Mars an indigenous pop- ulation of peaceful creative and intelligent Martians. Secondly he gave Mars itself a thin blue oxygen atmosphere. I could write an entire article about this book. Instead I will limit it to three of the stories. They are The Third Expedition Naming of Names and Usher II. The first one tells the story of an expedition which has come to Mars to find out what happened to the first two. Upon landing the crew three men find themselves on a street with all their boyhood homes. Long dead relatives appear. Have they died No the Martians are reading their thoughts to lull them into a false confidence. It is the only way the Martians can stop these strange beings from the blue and green planet next to them. The second story is incredibly short. Simply put it is a description of colonists naming mountains rivers canyons and towns as they arrive. This is a great parallel to what European colonists did as they arrived in the Americas. Interestingly enough all the Martians die due to diseases Humans brought with them. Sound familiar to any students of history Usher II is one of my favorites from this book. Before I ever bought a copy of The Martian Chronicles I had become fascinated with Edgar Allan Poe. When I realized Ray Bradbury was paying tribute to Poe I was hooked To this day they are both still my favorites. This story is a tale of revenge. A wealthy man invites the crme de la crme of Earth society to his replica of the House of Usher. He subsequently kills them all. The rich and powerful have outlawed reading literature pretty much anything creative andor intellectual. If that society sounds familiar it is because it is the same society of Farenheit 451. Montage the main character is a fire- man. Fireman burn all books found in the possession of others. Nobody reads everyone watches big screens called the family theatre and everyone takes pills to feel ok happy or sad. Sound familiar Montage has a change of heart and discovers how enriching literature can be. I feel this book is not about censorship but it is about social control. The Toynbee Convector deals with time travel. Professor Toynbee travels to the future. He comes back with photographs of a beautiful utopian future where Humans have solved all their problems. Now it is the anniversary of that historic trip to the future I urge all you reading this article to read this story. I do not want to spoil the ending. Now that I have shared my favorite works of Ray Bradbury I would like to explain what it is I love about his creative style. There is very unique visual style in his writing. I know all writers describe the scenery of their works but with Bradbury there is natural and fluid visualization of his works. It pulls you into his worlds in a way that words cannot accurately convey. Also he was quite prophetic. He wrote about people travelling in rockets two decades before it was a reality. Great science fiction is always prophetic Ray Bradbury is and always will be my favorite science fiction writer. His works are powerful insightful and genius. If you have never read any of his works you owe it to yourself to do so as soon as possible. My only regret is that I never had the chance to meet him. I have always believed you should write what you know My passions and fascinations include history philosophy mythology and psychology. I love to people watch. I get many ideas that way. I am an avid science fiction fan. Science fiction is based in our imagination our imagination propels humanity forward in all our endeavors. -Lewis Stockham Why I Love Ray Bradbury By Lewis Stockham 16 What will be the next British Invasion British Music Invasions Since the 60s To Now 18 Felice LaZae is a singersongwriter living in Los Angeles CA. To check out and download her new Give It Away EP go to her website at www.FeliceLaZae.com. I know that what Im about to say may not make a lot of Americans happy but I really feel this statement rings true. Amer- icans created rock n roll jazz and blues but the British took these genres mainly rock n roll to a whole new level. What is rock n roll without mentioning The Beatles Led Zeppelin The Rolling Stones Queen and Deep Purple These bands and many more from England created some of the most American rock n roll of their generations and yet none of them are American by birth. It all started with the British Invasion in the 1960s. The leaders of this invasion without doubt were The Fab Four - The Beat- les. They honed their skills for years playing in clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg. They played lots and lots of American pop covers un- til magical pop songwriting formulas were fused into their soul and they broke through on an international level. They were students of American music. Thats why they were able to make it their own and create music that inspired a whole generation. They were the first boy band craze. Beatlemania defined the whole teenage obsession with boy bands. It was the first time any band had ever created a craze at that level and its what opened the door for many boy bands thereafter. What would Justin Bieber be without his Beliebers and One Di- rection also British may I add without their Directioners The Beatles were the first band to create this sort of hysterical fan culture around their music and it changed pop culture forever. The next wave of the British Invasion was somewhat more rebellious. While The Beatles were considered more pop and accept- ed by conservative 1960s parents bands like the Rolling Stones and the Animals pushed boundaries and appealed to the more outsid- er audience. They popularized musical genres with origins in black culture such as rhythm and blues which sadly received very little popularity when performed by black American artists in the 1950s. While it is sad that some of these black artists were never heard I am happy that their influence was heard through these in- credible British bands. Of course with roots that were so unaccepted at that time this music was perceived by parents and conservatives as unwholesome and rebellious. But thank goodness for rebellious teens because this new wave led to many more innovations in rock music. Whats funny is bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience which is definitely an American band had to go to the UK to break out big. So while theyre not exactly British in a sense Jimi Hendrix is a result of the British Invasion as well. The 70s continued the British Invasion with artists like Da- vid Bowie Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. They de- fined genres from glam rock to heavy metal. While their American counterparts like Iggy Pop Alice Cooper and Lou Reed were mak- ing their own waves the British were never far behind. Its still hard for me to believe that bands like Queen The Smiths and The Clash that dominated during the 80s were all British. Their music defined rock in their generation yet some American fans dont even realize that they were not American. So whats next for British invasion Well after a decade of gratuitous AutoTuning in pop music the British once again are lead- ing the way in bringing back organic soulful music with tragic art- ists like Amy Winehouse and new artist like Adele and Sam Smith. The new British Invasion is a wave of neo soul that is both modern and innovative. If this is just a preview of what is to come and I cant wait for the next British Invasion to arrive 19 Flips All-Time NFL Offensive Team by Jay Schuster he best quarterback of all-time is...quite possibly the greatest discussion you will ever have at a holiday or a dinner party. Four Super Bowl wins six SB appearances two time NFL MVP and most importantly...married to Gisele Bundchen In the 2007 season Brady posted 50 touchdowns and 8 interceptions which pretty much happens only when playing Madden on easy. Brady has been playing the NFL on easy for his entire career and is still going strong. While a strong case could be made for Montana and Manning neither has as many super bowl wins appearances or marriages to super models as Brady does. Four Super Bowl wins six SB appearances two time NFL MVP and most This was by far the toughest position to pick the best ever at. Ive chosen Sanders over the others because Ive never seen a more incredible combination of balance vision and quickness like Barry had. Hell when you can say Barry to an NFL fan and they know who youre talking about you know you were good If you dont believe me hop on YouTube get some popcorn type in Barry Sanders and youre welcome This was the easiest category to choose from. Jerry Rice is not only the greatest wide receiver but is arguably the greatest football player ever. His ability to get open and run after the catch were legendary and his best moments seemed to come in the biggest games. Randy Moss and Tim Brown were both incredible WRs but arent even close to Rice. His 1549 career receptions and 208 TDs are both ridiculous numbers for a WR. I found tight ends to be a difficult position to choose. There are many different criteria used to evaluate tight ends including receiving and blocking. Tony Gonzalez was easily the worst blocker of the three very worthy candidates on this list but his pass catching and route running abilities were so special at the TE position that it really negates his poor run blocking skills. A special player and the greatest ever to play TE. Offensive linemen overall are probably the toughest to score only because its multiple positions included and different teams run different systems. John Hannah stands out to me as not only a fantastic pass blocking guard but also one that was famous for his pulling and run blocking. Pulling guards needed to be tough quick and have great balance and Hannah had all 3 including excellent size. The Patriots always had a great running game following The Hog and made it pretty clear they were running behind him most of the game. They dared teams to stop them and they still couldnt. As an aside Munoz is probably the greatest pass blocker of all time. Quarterback Tom Brady Runners-up Joe Montana Peyton Manning Running Back Barry Sanders Runners-up Jim Brown Adrian Peterson Wide Receiver Jerry Rice Runners-up Randy Moss Tim Brown Tight End Tony Gonzalez Runners-up Mike Ditka Ozzie Newsome Offensive Line John Hannah Runners-up Anthony Munoz Art Shell Coach Bill Belichick Runners-up Bill Walsh Vince Lombardi 21 Chest and back superset workout days can be some of the best workouts for building that Arnold chest for men or even that nice lean back for women. Here are a few fright night recommendations for your viewing pleasure this Halloween. Horrify Yourself With These Scary Movies This Halloween By Emily Messina For something different Cabin in the Woods 2012 Cabin in the Woods sets itself apart from other horror flicks because it encompasses all the horror movie elements you find in most films of the genre but in a creative way that will have your mind spinning by the end. The film follows five friends as they embark to spend the weekend at a cabin in the woods. And thats all you need to know. You can tell that writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard are hor- ror fans themselves and the writing and producing of Cabin in the Woods was a fun project for them something that comes out in the spirit of the film. For something funny Shaun of the Dead 2004 Shaun of the Dead is technically the first installment in Simon Pegg and Nick Frosts Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy which is followed by Hot Fuzz and The Worlds End. The film follows Shaun whos on a mission to win back his ex-girlfriend by defeating zombies in his com- munity. I like a guy who can put up a good fight against a zombie. This event is all about the stache hoping the difference in ap- pearance will grab enough attention that the mustache grower can start talking to those that inquire about mens health. This year the US campaign is to include mens mental health and mens fitness. To participate or donate heres the link httpsex.movember.com. A similar event call No-Shave November is a different or- ganization. They encourage people to grow out their hair and to donate what they wouldve otherwise spent on hair groom- ing for the month of November to the American Cancer So- ciety. This campaign isnt just about the mustache though it includes beards and for the ladies - their legs. For more info on how to participate visit httpsno-shave.org Q Ive got a new lady in my life and she wants to go in couples costumes for Halloween. That really isnt my thing but how to tell her without hurting her feelings A Im going to assume this is for a party and you dont mind going to parties in general but its the dressing up in costume you arent into. If thats the case then be upfront and honest with her. I believe the key to a good relationship is commu- nication. Its why Ive been with the hubster for a couple of decades now we talk. Sit your new lady down explain youll go to the party and encourage her to dress up but explain why going in costume isnt your thing. Perhaps you can come to a mutual agreement she dresses up and you can color coordinate your clothing or do something simple but comfortable to wear such as one of those tuxedo t-shirts a super hero t-shirt a sports jersey or wear a hat with a name tag that way you can be anything you want without having to actually put on a costume.
