Hi my name is Alex Ma of Coldbluesky Photography facebook.comcoldblueskyphotography Ive been shooting with models for almost a decade now but until a few years ago I hadnt heard of the term cosplay let alone know that cosplay photography was a genre. Now as a photographer with I have been covering cosplay conventions for the past three years including the recent San Diego Comic-Con last month. San Diego Comic-Con is special as one of the largest comic conventions in North America it draws talent from all over and brings them together making it a great place to meet and work with people youd never be able to otherwise. This year I got to work with talented cosplayers from Colorado New York Hawaii Mexico and Canada. Last year I met cosplayers who flew all the way from Ireland and Italy to attend this show San Diego Comic-Con is an amazing 4-day long convention with so much to see and do something for everyone. Some people are there for attending the panels and celebrity signings others are there for the exclusive merchandise and sneak peeks and others still are there to network with industry professionals. For me Im there for the cosplayers. At first it was only snapping a quick picture and moving on to the next simply documenting the different costumes by the fans. Later I found a few who were willing to shoot quick mini-photoshoots and we were able to produce portraits and more dramatic images of their outfits. As I started working with the cosplayers more I got to know them better. I like to hear as they passionately explain their construction process share their crafting cheats and shortcuts and tell me about their pre-convention panic attacks. With the difficulties of tight convention schedules last-minute costume breakdowns uncooperative weather and uninspiring backdrops making images that showcase the cosplayers talent and craftsmanship is an exciting challenge. Seeing them happy with the images we made inspires me to keep shooting. To me thats the satisfying reward of being a cosplay photographer.
