This includes volunteering at social work functions, taking on extra work tasks, working overtime on projects, etc. v Go in with a number in mind, but also be reasonable. A typical raise is any- where from 3-5%. v If your employer can’t manage a raise, ask instead if there is a chance for a bonus. START A SIDE BUSINESS There are so many ways to start a small business on the side. v If you artistic, consider opening an Etsy shop. v If you like to read and are a grammar Nazi, consider getting a job as a freelance editor for authors. v There are also many online options for taking surveys, writing reviews, mys- tery shopping, etc. A lot of people can make a few hundred a month on these services. COUPONING/RECYCLING SavingPRQH\LVMXVWDVJRRGDVEHLQJSDLGPRQH\VRPHWLPHV, am not suggesting going out for an episode of Extreme Couponing, EXWGH¿ QLWHO\WDNHVRPHWLPHZLWKWKHZHHNO\À LHUVDQGFOLSFRXSRQV to try and get your food at the best price possible. And, depending on your state, you can often go to recycling centers and get $0.05 per bottle or can recycled. This is actually getting money back, as you paid that $0.05 when you bought the bottle or can. LOOK AT YOUR ACCOUNTS A new year is a new time to review all of your accounts. v Is your bank account in the best account type? Could you earn a higher inter- est at a different institution? If so, move your money. v Is your insurance still at the levels you need? Could you get the same insur- ance level for less money at a different company? I did this last year with my auto insurance and found that I was paying almost 2x more then I needed to, and I made the switch. v What about your cell phone plan? Or your cable/internet plans? Are you getting the best value or could you switch companies? Switching may take some time, but it can save you hundreds and hundreds over the course of a year. ,hopeWKLVKDVKHOSHG\RX¿ QGZD\VWRHDUQVDYHVRPHH[WUD money this 2017!
