7 www.flipmagazine.netDecember2015 My wife and I recently attended a concert at an intimate and acoustically wonderful venue in Annapolis MD where we caught a show starring Morgan James. This was no accidental concert foray as I had become enormously aware of Ms. James from her many YouTube videos and from her stint with Scott Bradlees Postmodern Jukebox and various acoustic set pieces with one or two accompanists. My wife had seen just one video and though she loved it wondered why we drove all the way to Annapolis from Northern Virginia to see this particular artist. But I digresslet me tell you how this all got started. Last year while perusing FaceBook I saw a post from one of FLiP Magazines most awesome models Katie Rae Johnson. She directed me to a Youtube video of an artist singing a cover of Maps the Maroon 5 hit. The group was Scott Bradlees Postmodern Jukebox featuring Morgan James. Katie told me make sure you listen all the way to 256 of this video and be prepared to be blown away Blown away was an understatement Ms. James belted out notes in this song that I just didnt think could be done and literally made the hairs on my arm stand straight up. Its an amazing performance and you owe it to yourself to check it out. Since then Ive become a fan and I gobble up everything that she records. Getting to see her live in Annapolis promised to be a real treat. Her performance was flawless and even better Morgan forged a relationship with the audience that literally permeated the room. My wife who up until then appreciated her voice now loved her for much moreanother true fan was born to not only a wonderful voice but to a musician who loves her craft and loves sharing it with her audience. And lucky me I got to interview Morgan James as an assignment for FLiP. Morgan James was born in Boise ID and her family moved around a bit but she grew up primarily in Modesto CA the daughter of educators and actors. Her parents love of the performing arts led Morgan to join the choir in middle school and continued to practice her singing with the aid of a karaoke machine provided by her grandmother. Upon graduation from high school Morgan was accepted into the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York City where she studied opera. She received her Bachelor of Music in Voice in 2003 and also took a Master Class under famed Broadway veteran Barbara Cook. Upon graduation Morgan appeared in several Broadway shows including The Addams Family starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. During her stint on Broadway Morgan would pursue a solo artist career singing at clubs throughout the New York area. She recorded her first album Morgan James Live A Celebration of Nina Simone an artist that Morgan says inspires her to this day. The album was recorded at Dizzys Club Coca Cola a famed New York jazz club. www.flipmagazine.netDecember2015 MORGAN JAMES Soul Singer Broadway Favorite and International Chanteuse By Frank Monahan Cover photo by Emma Mead Photo by Robert Ascroft Photo by Robert Ascroft
